All of these lists are simple text files (compressed at the maximum level with GNU ZIP), and after decompression can be read with any desired text viewer on any system. Any problems with special characters and German umlauts should be minor, since around 99 % of the texts are in seven-Bit ASCII, i.e. the part of the character set that should be identical on every computer throughout the world. :-) Incidently, the lists are organized according to file areas, and include a complete description of every file - in principle nothing else than what you see here, except that everything is packed into a single text file, and is straight text, without HTML.

The only other thing to consider is the why and wherefore of such lists. Their origins lie in the "stone age" of electronic data transfer: at that time, it was expensive to be online, and so the user first downloaded only a list, selected the desired files at home (offline), and then downloaded these from the system. Naturally, this still is possible today. Just download one of the lists, look through it at home, and if anything interests you, you can download it specifically from this system. The download itself is similarly straightforward: assuming the file that interests you is in the MIX.208 area, you will find it here by ftp under "ftp://www.owlserver.de:2080/pub/mix/208/filename.ext", or by http under "http://www.owlserver.de:2080/ftp/pub/mix/208/filename.ext". The seemingly "inscrutible" organization of the ftp server at this site thus unravels to reveal a logical simplicity. :-)
